Old growth logging
From Envirowiki
Old growth forest is forest and bushland that has never been previously cleared, or hasn't been clear in hundreds of years. It is valuable in that it provides habitat for native species that would not otherwise be able to exist. Old growth often has magnificent examples of huge old trees, as such it is highly sought after by forest fuckers, for timber or wooodchips. Old growth logging requires none of the forest maintainence that plantation forest logging needs, which means it is much easier to profit from.
Humans sometimes take action to prevent the destruction of old growth forest, for any number of reasons. These can include:
- the protection of biodiversity
- protection of wilderness, for wilderness' sake, or for future generations to take part in.
- protection of rivers and waterways, of which forests, especially well established forests, act as a filter.
[edit] Current Campaigns
