[edit] 1 Causes
[edit] 1.1 non-anthropogenic causes
- species invasion - could happen with tectonic changes.
- nautral climate change
[edit] 1.2 Anthropogenic causes
Human induces causes of species becoming threatened:
- Anthropogenic climate change - changing bioregions
- Habitat destruction - land clearing, for agriculture, mining, urban expansion,
- Non-native species introduction - such as the rabbit into Australia
- Pollution - chemical pollution, water pollution,
- Hunting for sport or food. includes shooting, fishing, netting,
- Animal Control - used for pest species, such as in poison baiting foxes, but often affects native species too.
[edit] 2 Examples of threatened species
- Polar bear (Ursus marinus)
- Southern Resident Orca (Orcinus orca)
- Marine turtles (7 species of sea turtle)
[edit] 3 Organizations who track threatened species and their causes
Globally, the World Conservation Union keeps track of numbers of endangered and threatened species, and estimates 16,306 species out of 41,415 species evaluated (39%) world wide[1].
In Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (aka the department for fucking up everything not underground) deals with baiting and some forms of pollution.
